5,000 Inmates Moved As Ayutthaya Remains Battered by Floods

Bangpahan Hospital has been forced to close

Heavy rains and flooding have killed at least 244 people, left parts of Thailand submerged, and damaged businesses and historical sites, authorities said Friday.

Fifty-eight of Thailand's 77 provinces have been affected by this season's flooding which is the worse in recent memory.

Flooding has affected more than 2 million people since July, authorities said.

An emergency center has been set up at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, said Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

The waters have caused considerable damage to parts of the Ayutthaya province in central Thailand.

At least 160 factories there have been damaged and rains have also threatened historical temples in several areas.

Police close off Asia Highway from Manorom, Chainat-Bangpahan, Ayutthaya because of high level of flooding; northern bus service halted.

Train services on the Northern Line only go as far as Ayutthaya due to flooding on the tracks.

Due to heavy flooding in Ayutthaya the Transport Company announces the suspension of all bus services on all routes to the North.

70% of Ayutthaya is under water. Authorities warn it can get worse 3 days from now with new waves of waters from North.

Bangkok was preparing emergency stocks of food and drinking water, and setting up evacuation centres at schools.

The military has been deployed to help victims and army camps are being opened to evacuees.

A key test for the authorities is expected in mid-October when large amounts of run-off water reaches the low-lying capital and high tides make it harder for the floods to flow out to sea.
